What is a Speech and Language Intervention?

A speech and language intervention (therapy session) consists in a series of activities that are aimed to improve the aspects of speech and language that your child has difficulties with.

During a speech and language intervention, the SLP presents those activities in a fun way, in order to keep the client motivated and engaged throughout the entire session.

What can your child work on during a Speech and Language Therapy session (depending on what their difficulties are)?

  • Understanding of language (they will be able to understand short and long sentences, short stories or school lessons)
  • Use of language (they will be able to express themselves with an appropriate vocabulary and grammar)
  • Speech sounds (they will be able to understand what movements their mouth needs to make in order to create a specific sound)
  • Attention (they will be able to focus their attention on a task for an increasingly longer amount of time)
  • Social communication (they will be able to wait for their turns, ask for repetition, provide more information when someone asks for it, etc.)

How long does a session take?

  • This depends on the attention span (and age) of your child. The session can last from 20 to 45 minutes.

How much does a session cost?

  • This also depends on the duration of the session (to be discussed with the therapist). A 45 minutes session’s fee is £59.
